Sam the koala became the world's most famous Koala thanks to this video of firefighter David Tree stopping to give Sam a drink of water during Victoria's Black Saturday bushfires. Sam suffered burns to her paws and was in a lot of pain but became a symbol of hope during this tragedy.
Sam seemed to be on the road to recovery but unfortunately had to be put down on August 6, 2009 due to an illness not related to her bushfire injuries. Vets decided that Sam was too badly affected by urogenital chlamydiosis, a life-threatening disease that affects 50 per cent of the koala population, and the best thing for her was to end her suffering. She however lives on in the minds and hearts of her fans here in Australia and around the world.
